TIPS on hearing your favorite radio stations!

If you live near an AM station that broadcasts "bluegrass" music, a receiver with a syncronous am detector will help a lot.   This is
particularly true with stations that broadcast on "regional" channels.  Regional stations broadcast with a minimum power of 1000 watts daytime,
and about 500 watts at night.  Before spending a bunch of your hard earned money on a receiver with such a detector, call the AM station you
wish to listen to, and find out if it is "directional".   IF the station broadcasts on 1240, 1490, 1230,1400, 1450, or 1340 kilohertz it is a
class 4 local station so by all means try an "outdoor" antenna of some sort.  IF your receiver budget is "unlimited" get a receiver with " IF
or "intermediate freaquency" shift.  Heck, I cheat, I use a 300 foot long wire and a Hammarlund 129X to listen to the Grand Ole Opry on good
old WSM out of Nashville.  I can't stand solid-state radios for music because they "bite" on the high audio end .  Several audio engineers
have told me that tubes are more  "linear".  I had a blind girl friend who could not stand FM stereo because she could hear the 20,000 hertz
pilot signal used in "multiplex" broadcasting .  This is not the case now, because as one gets older, your hearing goes bad on the high end
first.  IF you have a 10 meter or 2 meter mobile rig give me a shout when you are around Springfield, Illinois. I have a General ham ticket,
do you have anything on 160 meters? 1800 to 2000 kilohertz.

IF your readers will give me a description of their shortwave or medium-wave receiver, model brand and most of all , DOES IT HAVE
EXTERNAL antenna connections??  I will be glad to help them with reception problems.  If  your readers should decide to purchase an older
tube-type short-wave receiver they should make sure it has a control labeled "antenna trimmer", this control will electrically tune the
antenna for the desired freaquency.  On some receivers this control may be labeled "pre-selector". Following is a list of the most popular
short-wave bands  (49 meters) 5,980 to6,200 kilohertz.  (41 Meters) 7,300 to7,425 kilohertz.  (25 Meters) 11,800 to 12.025 kilohertz.   (22
Meters) 13,600 to 13,800 kilohertz.   (19 Meters) 15,100 to 15,400 kilohertz.  If you wish to check your watch for accuracy, tune the
receiver to 2,500khz, 5000 khz, 10,000 kilohertz or 15,000 kilohertz.  The time will be announced in UTC (universal coordinated Time) formerly
GMT Greenwich Mean Time.  The 24 hour "military time" is used, 1 am is  0100 hours 1 pm is 1300 hours, midnight would be 2400 hours. IF you live near Ottawa, Ontario tune the receiver to CHU 7333 khz.  The time will be announced in Eastern Standard Time in both French and English.  The pitch of the tone  on the US WWV changes every 15 seconds, so you can get your wattch accurate to plus or minus 15 seconds if the watch has a second hand.  This is important if you are driving a freight train and it is only 3 cars long and you do not wish to be "rear-ended" by one that is 100 cars long, and therefore much heavier.   My uncle was a conductor on the GM%O Railroad and every 3 months he had to turn in his watch to be checked for accuracy.  If it lost or gained more than 1 minute in 24 hours, the railroad would fix the watch or tell him to "deep-six" it if it would not be accurate to within 1 minute in 24 hours.  No sense playing the part of Casey Jones and getting scalded by the steam in a
train wreck!  You can write to me. EMAIL

TIP from WMKY DJ, and my buddy Sandy Knipp.  When listening to bluegrass turn the volume up. The kids may be listening.

The GE Super Radio is an excellent radio for around $50.

Use an external antenna if you can.  Radio Shack has a good one (part number 15-2163) that can mount outdoors, or in an attic for around $20.

If you're using an FM antenna the higher in the air the better!

If you want to go for some gusto use it with a rotor so you can turn it toward the desired station's transmitter.  Rotors run in the $35-$75 price range (also available at Radio Shack).

FOLLOW ALL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS!!
READ THE DIRECTIONS CAFEFULLY!!
It's not hard work at all,
but it's better to be safe than DEAD.
BECAREFUL OF POWERLINES!
DO NOT PUT AN ANTENNA NOWHERE NEAR POWERLINES!
ANY LINE IN THE AIR CAN KILL YOU!
